The Winner. (Broschiert)

Poorest work from Baldacci yet

The plot of this book is so appallingly illogic that not even Baldacci's extraordinary style of writing could turn the book into a good read.

The initial pages present an intriguing enough story, pleasantly written: young poor woman in conflict with the authorities wins the national lottery jackpot. This due to the involvement of a sinister patron who fixes the lottery. Only catch of the deal: she does have to leave the US forever.

Considering that she is now the richest woman in the world, that she has no living relatives, is accused of having murdered her spouse and despises the place she used to live, one might thing that she would be able to comply with such a moderate demand.

And yet, without an explanation by the author, the woman returns to put herself and her beloved daughter, who is according to the author the most precious thing to her mother, in peril of death for.... well, nothing: she lives completely isolated in a place she doesn't know and doesn't do anything but fear for her and her daughters life because she violated the agreement with her patron by returning to the USA.

This illogic twist in the plot kept nagging at me throughout the remaining 2/3 of the book making it a drag.
From this point onwards every time the protagonist finds herself in a tight spot Baldacci lets her escape with disappointingly simple story telling:
"At that very moment and from a place so deep that LuAnn never even knew she possessed it, there came a rush of strenght..."
Are, for example, the lines that explain how the protagonist overcomes the villain.

A failure from page 100 or so to the last you would do better to donate your money to charity than to waste it on this book.
